Our Story
I hated my job. With an intensity that had me always dreaming about what else I could do to pay the bills. It’s said that if you do what you love, you’ll never work another day again. I loved books. But it was 2014 and everyone knew you couldn’t operate a bookstore in this modern world of big box stores and online retail. So what did I do? Reader, I opened a bookstore.
My wonderfully supportive husband, clearly also of unsound mind, agreed that opening a bookstore and wiping out our $5,000 savings account to do so was a good idea. While still working full-time at my previous job we found a store-front, remodeled it, and figured out how to stock a used bookstore. The first few months after we opened were scary hard. Days would go by with no customers, which would reinforce the idea that this had been a huge mistake. However, now more than 5 years later, I am proud to say that The Dog Eared Book is here to stay. It isn’t actually true that you don’t work anymore at something you love. I work harder now and longer hours than I ever have. But I love every minute. We have also gone through massive changes in the store from layout design to being able to stock new books. My heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful people who have discovered us and go out of their way to buy local. You have allowed this crazy dream to come true.
